Character is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching!

“Character Counts”
Here at Olinda, we want to provide a “Safe and Caring” environment where students learn to get along with one another, communicate effectively, solve problems peacefully, and make good choices.
District-wide this year, our schools are utilizing The CHARACTER COUNTS! approach to character education. All students in grades 3rd – 6th have character education built right into their school agendas.
In addition, I will be going into each classroom once a month to talk to the students about one of the six pillars of character education. We read stories, share ideas, role play, and complete activities that deal with that monthly theme. Then the students are responsible to be on the look out for students in their own classroom who demonstrate the theme. Prior to our flag assemblies, students write down a fellow classmate’s name and nominate them for Student of the Month. The classroom teacher takes all nominations into account and selects the student that best represents the monthly character theme. It is a great way for our students to start recognizing one another for their positive choices and good behaviors.
The Six Pillars include:

Trustworthiness
Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable - do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation

Respect
Treat others with respect • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

Responsibility
Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act - consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

Fairness
Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly

Caring
Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need

Citizenship
Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment
