Five 5th graders designed "Vest Buddy" to help Justin, a nonverbal soccer player. Awards: OCSEF - STEM Showcase, Outstanding Achievement Paradigm Challenge (an international contest) - 1st place, Junior Division

Now that we've done buttons, we're wondering if we can do it with MakeyMakey, and yes we can with scratch and we had a little fun in the process ask me questions Are you hungry? Are you tired? Are you crazy? Do you like school? hungry,  help me restroom Do you need help? East Wenatchee May you have auspiciousness and causes of success. May you have the confidence to always do your best. generous happiness This is prototype 2C. It has 15 buttons and the ground is over here. It is made for a left-hander because right now the most buttons is on the side because Justin our "model" is going to be left handed. So, here... Let me untie this - is where the MakeyMakey is and then connects all the way to the side where all the double combinations are with the diodes. Here is a speaker that is connected to the back as well as with the MakeyMakey wiring and everything is connected to this Raspberry Pi over here. Also where we're going to be setting up, there is a power pack over here And then that's basically it for the vest. Orange County Science and Engineering Fair So our project is called "Vest Buddy". It's basically a wearable augmented alternative communication vest also known as a WAAC and we have 3 prototypes that are working we have Eric's 15 button vest Shraya and my 5 button vest call Maria's 4 button vest. So I'm wearing the latest prototype of Vest Buddy. It talks! When you press these buttons, look. "Hi. My name is Justin." Love it! Nailed it! You guys are awesome! For future research we hope to do it with an Arduino or recordable greeting card, which is under $10 and really light weight. And we also want to sell it to a company once we're finished with the entire thing. And hopefully put a patent on it so it's ours. I think this is a really amazing project. As someone whose worked a lot with kids and worked with kids with autism I'm just really proud of you all Coding is amazing and people make incredible projects but to actually use your power your superpower of creativity and design to make something to help out someone else That is so powerful and so incredible. And I just want to celebrate you all because I think that's absolutely amazing. I am just blown away by this project. KTLA 5 News KTLA 5 News Paradigm Challenge I'm here with this group of 5th graders. Spectrum News This group is helping one of their very good friend find his voice. nothing more than me just like every other kid on the soccer field ground or even in the classroom and now he can 5th graders from Olinda Elementary School in Brea might seem typical they're not. Look closer. They're scientists, computer Wizards and inventors It's working. and they're also really good friends to a kid who's just like them, but can't talk. how old are "I am 13 years old." He loves making friends and playing games, like kick ball in soccer. But he can't carry his talker, a very expensive  and fragile computer all over the field try touching another button We thought that hey, there's a whole world of unfortunate people who can't communicate so we thought hey why don't we make it wearable is called the "Vest Buddy". These 5th graders determined to help Justin talk turn it into an award-winning science project Here's how it works: We have the touch a ground button from a MakeyMakey and press another button to receive a message with the help of Raspberry Pi and a power pack.  What do you think of the vest that your friends made you. "Good" It's kind of like really special for him to be able to like wearing it and then he likes too which... It's really exciting. I'm almost in tears that they would care so much about Justin. Their Teacher, Miss Berrner, told them about Justin and they were so inspired by him that they wanted to do something for their science project to help other children. It's 99% heart and 1% science. The hope is that these kids will be able turn their science project into a reality for other kids who can't speak, or foo stroke victims, the elderly, really anyone in need. You don't really words to see why it works. Will you be my friend? My friend.
