Hello. Our project is called "Vest Buddy". A verbal augmented alternative communication vest. The three of us are 6th graders from Olinda Elementary School in Brea California. I'm Sarah, I'm Maria, and I'm Eric. We would like to tell you about her friend Justin. Justin has a very rare genetic disorder identified as SOX5 One of the effect of having this disorder is trouble speaking. Because of this, Justin has trouble every single day socializing. For example, when he goes on the soccer field, he has to leave his $8,000 talking device with his parents and cannot communicate simple ideas with his teammates on the field. And it's not only Justin. Approximately 7.5 million people in the US have trouble using their voices according to the National Institute of deafness and other communication disorders. We didn't find any devices that we're good for it using during outdoor activity for these people. The closest was a handheld AAC or a hipbelt. In our research we also found a Raspberry Pi and MakeyMakey, which could help us while we were making our vests. The purpose of this is to help people with speaking disabilities talk while being active. We want the prototypes to meet the following requirements: easy to take on and off, easy to program, the volume can be adjusted, The user can move easily in it, It's quick powered on and off, it is one hand operated, and it's washable. Our first prototype, 1A was a conceptual idea which uses hackked recordable buttons in a vest. Prototype 2A is a conceptual design that tries to implement MakeyMakey into a vest and see if it works. Prototype 2B uses MakeyMakey and Raspberry Pi which acted as a mobile computer. This vest has five buttons and uses the program Scratch. You can program the vest buttons to say anything the user wants. "Hello". This is prototype 2C and it's basically the same as Prototype 2B except it has 15 buttons and more advanced code. The next two prototypes are most recent prototypes featured in Generation 2. Prototype 1B, our cheapest vest so far, uses four cheap recordable greeting cards and a speaker. Prototype 2D uses and Intel compute stick instead of a Raspberry Pi. The vest is made out of very soft blue fabric and is custom design with 12 colorful buttons. The vests programs can be accessed and changed via iPad and can be wirelessly set up and operated with one hand. Overall, we created three working prototypes that all cost less than $250. Another thing we realized is that it can help more than just autistic kids. Many people of different ages that have speaking disabilities, like elderly people who have strokes, could communicate better using a WAAC. We also want to make a website or an app for the vest that involve Raspberry Pi and MakeyMakey instead of using scratched in order to make it easier to use. We thank these people for letting us do what we love and helping us help others along the way.
